All the Central men’s basketball team needs to do today is win. Win and they’ll clinch a spot in the six-team Iowa Conference tournament that starts next week.
Cellar-dwelling Luther is the squad that stands in their way up in Decorah this afternoon on the final day of the regular season. Coach Craig Douma says despite Luther’s record, his team will not take anything for granted today, and adds the team must win the battle of the boards.
The Dutch were victorious in their first bout with the Norse in early January, 82 – 67. Central can still get into the Iowa Conference tournament if they lose; they are locked into a three-way tie currently with Dubuque and Wartburg, both of whom Central swept this season. A Dutch loss coupled with a loss by either of those two schools would also put Central into the league tournament.
The Central women have a chance to finish the 2016-17 season on a high note against one of the better teams in the Iowa Conference. Luther’s women handed nationally-ranked Wartburg their only conference loss this season, and are 11 – 4 in the league this year and 15 – 9 overall. They overcame a seven-point deficit inside of P.H. Kuyper to beat Central on January 4, 75 – 72, using an 8-for-16 clip from outside the arc to battle back and squeak by the Dutch.
Today’s doubleheader will be live on 92.1 KRLS, KNIAKRLS.com, and via our free KRLS mobile app. Cory Houser and Jacob Dreyer will call the action with the PellaMotors.com Radio Pregame Show starting at 1:45 p.m. and tip-off slated for 2:00.
