Many residents in Pella are anxiously awaiting news about their favorite flowers.
According to City of Pella Parks Director Chandler Nunnikhoven, the staff has yet to see tulips peeking up in the beds planted by the city last fall.
“I went out [earlier this week] to look at a couple of beds that usually come up first in the spring time, and I’m happy to report there’s nothing out of the ground–yet,” he says. “I went digging a little bit with a screwdriver and they are starting to pop.”
Nunnikhoven says he can’t definitively say how soon tulips will come out of the ground, but additional cooler weather will slow the growth of the flowers. More than 100,000 bulbs were planted by City of Pella parks staff and volunteers last fall for the 82nd annual Tulip Festival.
