As the Iowa House and Senate turn their attention to the state’s ailing budget, numerous policy bills cleared both chambers last week.
Much of the legislation clearing over the past few weeks as been contentious, including a voter ID law passed by the Iowa Senate last week, which would require any Iowan participating in an election to have a form of identification when heading to the polls.
State Senator Ken Rozenboom was a supporter of the measure passing primarily on party lines. Rozenboom has frequently denied claims that the measure will disenfranchise low-income, elderly, disabled, or minority voters.
Most of the changes to voting laws in Iowa would take place in 2019. The bill outlines five forms of identification that would be valid at the polls, four of which include a photo, the fifth of which is a voter verification card the state and county would issue to every voter free of charge.
