Pella Christian’s girls soccer team came from the brink of elimination to advancing to the class 2A regional finals after coming back to win a double overtime thriller in our No. 3 moment of the Eagles season.

The Eagles edged Bondurant-Farrar 2-1 on June 2nd in the final athletic contest at Eagles football stadium of the last academic year. The Lady Jays broke free for a pinball type of goal in the 59th minute to take a 1-0 lead .

Tension grew throughout the final twenty minutes of action, as the Eagles tried to battle back, but found themselves just missing on a couple of shots as time started to dwindle. With less than a minute left, PC was down to their final chance, when Annika Terpstra found an open Laura DeZwarte with 37 seconds to tie the game. After saving their season, the Eagles again held the ball and had a few chances to end the game in the first overtime period, but eventually both teams needed a second OT to settle the score.

With 2:41 remaining, Cailey Terpstra lasered a pass from midfield to an open DeZwarte, who hit the game winner from 30 feet out. DeZwarte says it was part excitement and felt like a burden was lifted after the second goal.

“It was the greatest relief imaginable,” she says. “I couldn’t even comprehend what was going on at first, and it took a while to sink in, but then I realized that we did it and finished it.”

Pella Christian finished the season 15-5 in the Regional Finals in a season which they shattered numerous school records for most wins and consecutive victories.
