Kohle Helle accounted for 347 yards of offense and Jon Alberts nailed a school record four field goals as the Central College football team beat Augustana 33-22 Saturday in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
The Dutch bolted out of the gate quick, forcing a Viking three-and-out and then finding the end zone two plays later – a 71-yard strike from Helle to tight end P.J. Norem.
Coming into Saturday, Alberts had never made a collegiate field goal. He booted two in the first half to stretch Central’s lead to 13-0, and they led 13-7 at intermission.
His third field goal made it 16-7, but the Vikings hung tough and trailed just 30-22 with less than five minutes remaining.
Central drove deep into Auggie territory, giving Alberts a chance to seal the game with his record-breaking kick. Helle, the holder, dug a low snap off the turf and Alberts kicked a 33-yarder to ice the game.
Helle’s great hold was just part of an MVP-type day. Filling in for the injured Nate Boland at quarterback, Helle was 16-of-21 passing for 245 yards and two touchdowns, and he rushed 17 times for 102 more.
Central is 1-1 on the season, and will travel to Storm Lake on Saturday for their Iowa Conference opener at Buena Vista.
