A prolonged summer drought in Marion County has worsened.
According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor Report, portions of Marion County are now rated in “D3 – extreme” drought conditions. The rest of the county remains in “D2 – severe” drought as well.
Extreme conditions have spread to portions of Warren, Lucas, and Mahaska Counties. According to the National Weather Service, little precipitation is in the forecast over the next seven to ten days. The U.S. Drought Monitor defines “extreme drought” as a time in which crop or pasture losses and water shortages are likely.
