The civil trial in the homicide of Shirley Carter continues this week.

Shirley Carter was shot and killed in her home in western Marion County on June 19th, 2015. Bill Carter, husband of Shirley, accuses son Jason of committing the murder, and Jason says his father did it. Last week the trial featured opening statements with the lawyer of Bill Carter telling the jury that he would show the audience that Jason Carter lived a reckless lifestyle, had at least one affair, was deeply in debt, and allegedly killed Shirley Carter to gain access to his parent’s approximately $10 million dollars in assets.

Attorney for Jason Carter, Steve Wandro of Des Moines, presented a very different story in his opening statements and told the jury Jason had no money problems and a loving relationship with his mother. He told the jury that it was indeed true that the murderer of Shirley Carter was in the courtroom, and turned and pointed at Bill, Shirley’s husband, and Jason’s father.

The first week in the trial also included crime scene reconstruction, timeline reconstruction, , a thorough look into Jason Carter and Shelly Carters finances, as well as testimony from Jason’s ex girlfriend in which he was having an affair, his wife Shelly, and Bill Carter himself. Attorneys tell KNIA/KRLS News the trial may last through the week.

The trial continues today.
