Marion County and Lake Red Rock are known for their bird migrations and habitats during the winter months, but this winter residents are getting a chance to see a rare visitor.

Marion County Naturalist Marla Mertz tells KNIA/KRLS News Snowy Owls from the arctic have been spotted in Marion County as they are migrating down during the winter. Mertz’s says the visit usually occurs when the Snowy Owls have a boost in the amount of food available in their natural habitat. According to Mertz, the owls are nomadic so if residents are able to spot one, it might be the only chance they get.
