When you only have ten players on your roster to begin with, you can’t afford too many setbacks.

That’s a challenge facing the Pella Christian girls basketball team in the early part of the 2017-2018 season.

They’ve been without point guard Mary Kate Bandstra for four of their seven games, as she suffered an injury in their game against ADM. That’s left them with just nine players in uniform, and coach Kevin Van Maanen says that several of them were dealing with their own issues in Monday night’s win over Knoxville.

“(Emma) Huisman just really gutted it out tonight. She wasn’t feeling very well, and you could tell on some of those shots late in the game as she just didn’t have her legs left. Mo (Morgan Fopma) has been struggling with her back issue and she gutted it out tonight. Mara (Juffer) has been a little under the weather, so I knew it would be a tough game yet, playing Knoxville, and I’m proud of the kids how they came out and played.”

The Eagles won the game, 66-39, thanks to big games from two of their healthiest players. Isabella Baugh had 20 points and 17 rebounds and Kaley Wilson scored 17.

As Pella Christian prepares for Norwalk on Friday night, Van Maanen says that he’s making sure to keep the balance between practicing hard to help the team improve, and laying off enough to let his injured and under-the-weather players rest up.
