Iowa House Republicans may soon release their plan to reduce the current fiscal year budget to make up for a shortfall reported in December by the state’s Revenue Estimating Conference.

Iowa Senate Republicans are proposing $52 million in budget cuts for the current fiscal year that will reduce funding at state universities and community colleges, the state’s courts, and health and human services. Representative Guy Vander Linden says he doesn’t anticipate cuts that deep coming from the house committees working to solve the funding shortfall.

“I think the current shortfall is closer to $37 million, and the governor has provided us with her input on that,” he says. “I think the governor’s numbers are better, frankly, than the senate’s number, and I don’t know how the senate came up with their proposed cuts.”

Governor Kim Reynolds proposed nearly $30 million in cuts in her annual budget. Vander Linden says as soon as the two chambers reconcile the current fiscal year, they will likely begin working on setting a state aid increase for public K-12 schools for 2019.
