The Pella Christian boys held off DCG in a double-overtime thriller, and the Eagles girls gave up a big Fillies run in the 3rd quarter in a doubleheader heard live on KNIAKRLS.com.

P.C.’s boys won 57-54, and the girls fell 52-42.

For the Eagles boys, they led the majority of their tilt with DCG, with leads as large as seven in three separate occasions, but a late Mustangs run forced the Eagles to make a stop to push the contest to overtime.

Pella Christian held a three-point lead late after a steal turned into and-one chance for Alex Pringle before DCG answered with their own.

The Eagles eventually surged ahead in the 2OT after a Jack Vermeer three in the back-and-forth period, and Pringle made a game saving rebound with 1.4 left after a missed free throw by the Mustangs.

Head Coach Larry Hessing was most impressed with his team’s ability to fight back in both overtimes.

“I’m really proud of the guys in terms of how they competed tonight,” he says. “The game was a little messy, and it’d seem like we had things under control, and then we wouldn’t make a play or we’d get a turnover or miss some free throws or give up a drive.”

“But whatever the case, and we went down early in both overtimes and had to get a stop at the end of regulation just to get into overtime, so our team was really gritty tonight and they really competed.”

Alex Huisman led the way with an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double. Pella Christian’s boys are now 4-6.

The girls fell after holding a seven point lead early in the third quarter before the Fillies rattled off a 15-0 run to pull away. Morgan Fopma finished with 14 points and Emma Huisman scored 12.

The Eagles girls are now 7-5. Both teams wrap up their first turn through the Little Hawkeye conference Friday at home vs. Newton.
