Pella’s girls blew out Oskaloosa last night 63-14 and the Indian boys returned the favor with a 72-45 victory as part of a basketball doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Lady Dutch forced Oskaloosa into 29 first half turnovers and didn’t allow an Indian field goal in building a 38-2 lead at intermission.

Pella turned many of those turnovers into layups on the offensive end, and coach Jerod Garland says that was a big key to the victory.

“We don’t shoot as well as other teams, so we have to get those turnovers, get teams sprinting back on defense, trying to get 2-on-1s and take advantage of those. You can get 2-on-1s, 3-on-2s, but if you don’t execute, you’re not going to score. Sometimes too many passes allow the defense to get back and catch up. It’s important to attack when you’re in that position, and I thought we attacked well.”

Ten players scored last night for the Lady Dutch, led by Emily Holterhaus who scored 21 points and added nine rebounds. Pella improves to 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

In the boys game, Oskaloosa closed the first quarter on a 12-2 run to build a double digit lead, and Pella never got closer than 11 the rest of the way, with the Indians pulling away for good in the fourth quarter.

Landon Vander Leest scored 14 points to pace Pella, Nick DeJong added 10 points and 11 boards, and Ryan Gustafson also scored 10. Pella falls to 6-4 and 3-3 in the league.

Both the Little Dutch and Lady Dutch will head to Grimes on Friday night to take on DC-G.
