State Senator Ken Rozenboom says he and fellow Iowans have had enough of scam phone calls.

So, after a series of calls to his phone with “spoofed” numbers, he introduced legislation to the Senate that calls for penalties for offenders.

“The bill simply prohibits a person from knowingly using or providing false or misleading caller identification information to an Iowa telephone subscriber that is physically located in Iowa,” he says.

Rozenboom says while federal laws are in place, having a law in Iowa Code allows state and local law enforcement and prosecutors to better punish scammers using the technique.

“There are federal guidelines, federal regulations on this type of thing, and because of interstate commerce commission rules, we can’t do the feds work for them,” he says. “But within the borders of Iowa, we believe this bill is written in such a way that it’ll be very helpful.”

The Federal Communications Commission says spoofing is often used as part of an attempt to trick someone into giving away valuable personal information by using a local phone number. Hear more from Rozenboom on today’s Let’s Talk Pella.
