The first major deadline in the 2018 Iowa legislative session is fast approaching, with lawmakers still trying to wrap up work on two major issues.

District 79 Representative Guy Vander Linden tells KNIA/KRLS News lawmakers in the Iowa House and Senate are close to coming up with final numbers for an increase to K-12 education and addressing a revenue shortfall for the current fiscal year.

He says once that work is complete, the next major task is reforming the state’s tax code. Vander Linden says although they’ve been cutting the budget, revenue is still growing, and he feels it’s a good time to try and simplify the taxes Iowans pay.

On top of reviewing the state’s tax code, lawmakers will have to lobby for the key issues they would like to see pass this year, as the first funnel deadline for bills to pass in committees is this Friday.
