The Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance will make a presentation to the Pella City Council about considering adding microbreweries as an allowable use following regular business at Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Members of the PACE Alliance had previously requested the addition of ‘brewpub’ to the zoning code, however, concerns were raised over the ability of those businesses to generate a majority of their revenue from food sales, which is a requirement for restaurants. The proposed brewpub ordinance was tabled by the council during the February 6th meeting. The primary use for the proposed microbrewery zoning law is the manufacturing of beer or alcohol, with consumption of beer and food sales as a secondary use. This definition is different than a cocktail lounge zoning use, which applies to bars that have the sale of alcohol has a primary use.
Proposed language for the microbreweries would limit production to 10,000 barrels annually. The Pella City Council will hear the proposal following their regular meeting beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Pella Public Safety Complex.
