The Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance is supporting an upcoming ballot measure that would allow the Pella City Council to proceed with an internet utility.
A special referendum will be held on May 1st asking residents of Pella the question “Shall the City of Pella, in the County of Marion, State of Iowa, be authorized to establish a Municipally-Owned telecommunications system (including cable communications, television, video, voice, telephone, data, internet, broadband and all other forms of telecommunications and cable communications systems and services) Utility?”
PACE Alliance Executive Director Karen Eischen tells KNIA/KRLS News as demand for high speed connectivity continues to grow, access is critical for a vibrant local economy and overall quality of life for Pella residents.
The measure requires the support of 50.1% of voters in order to pass, with the council likely to continue work on a utility over the next year if it is approved.
