Local students recently attended Boys and Girls State, run by the American Legion and it’s Auxiliary.

Boys & Girls State are educational programs where high school students learn about their local, county and state government. Participants in Boys State included Nyan Baker and Elliot Schmidt of Knoxville, Carter Briggs and Nathan Leathers of Pella, and Jack Lauer and Max Hinners of Pleasantville. Girls State participants included Caroline Woodle of Knoxville, Camryn Huyser and Makayle Kruse of Pella, and Melena Johnson and Taylor Clark of Pleasantville.

Max Hinners tells KNIA/KRLS News the biggest thing he learned was to earn recognition you have to work hard as guest speakers at the event really stressed campaigning for things you are passionate about, and he wants to bring that commitment to his senior year of high school and beyond.

Jack Lauer of Pleasantville will also be attending Boys Nation in July. Lauer tells KNIA/KRLS News it was a shock and an honor to be selected, and he is thrilled to be able to meet some of the finest people from all over the nation and work hand in hand with them. Boys Nation takes place July 20th-28th in Washington D.C. A full interview of the Pleasantville Boys State participants can be found below.
