Authorities have confirmed one person has drowned in the Des Moines River downstream of the Red Rock Dam.

Numerous agencies responded to a call of multiple people having trouble in the water at South Tailwater at 2:55 this afternoon. A local fisherman, who has not been identified, helped pull out seven people swimming in the river, including an unconscious young girl. Her life was saved by CPR, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.

Lt. Brian Bigaouette tells KNIA/KRLS News a 40-year-old male was found dead about 20 yards from where the initial incident happened by the Pleasantville Dive Team. Firefighters searched for nearly two hours to find the man, who is not being identified, pending family notification. The family is from Minnesota, according to police.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pella Fire, Knoxville Fire and Rescue, Pella Ambulance, Pleasantville Rescue, the Pella Police Department and Marion County Emergency Management responded.
