Deer hunting season opens for youth this weekend, and the unusually warm weather will give kids their first opportunity to hunt for large game this year.
Todd Gosselink from the Department of Natural Resources wildlife unit at Red Rock tells KNIA/KRLS News there are a number of chances in the next few weeks for younger hunters to go afield.
“There aren’t any new restrictions on deer hunting…it’s a great time for the youth to get out there. There’s also the disabled hunt where they can go September 15th to 30th,” says Gosselink. “Great time to get out there…it’s obviously pretty warm, but not cold yet, so if you like warm-weather hunting this is a great season for taking youth and go out deer hunting.”
Gosselink notes that because the weather will be warm, hunters not only have to observe the typical safety rules…but they have to be aware of the temperatures, and make sure they stay hydrated while they’re out.
Archery will begin on October 1st, while muzzleloading season opens up October 13th.
