It was a busy weekend on campus at Central for homecoming, and for numerous of their athletics teams:
– Central football defeated Buena Vista 62-20 in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Sophomore quarterback Blaine Hawkins was a laser-like 16-of-17 for 206 yards and four touchdowns, setting a new school completion percentage record. His .941 effort shattered the mark of .864 set by Chris Nelson against Wartburg in 1972.
– Already surpassing its 2018 season win total, the Central College volleyball team swept a pair of non-conference matches Saturday. The Dutch also climbed above the .500 mark at 10-8 in toppling Ripon College (Wis.) 25-21, 25-19, 25-23 and host Grinnell College 25-22, 25-16, 25-21. Central travels to Cedar Rapids Friday for a 7:30 p.m. American Rivers Conference match at Coe College.
– A resilient Central College men’s soccer team rebounded from a string of disappointments to notch a significant 1-0 victory at Wartburg College Saturday. The Dutch were 0-4 in games with one-goal decisions, including three overtime setbacks, heading into Saturday.
– Forward Erin Manion scored twice, and for the first time since 2006, the Central College women’s soccer team came away from Waverly a winner Saturday with a 2-1 decision over Wartburg College. Central takes on Coe College Wednesday in a league women’s-men’s doubleheader.
– Freshman Miranda Kruiswyk turned in the second-fastest 6,000-meter time in Central College women’s cross country history at the Rim Rock Farm Collegiate Meet hosted by the University of Kansas Saturday. Kruiswyk was 13th overall in 22:17.9, trailing only Beth Cunningham on Central’s all-time charts. Central, the lone NCAA Division III squad in the 16-team field, was 10th with 265 points.
– Central College freshman Sarah Schirm prevailed in the day’s final match to preserve a 5-4 women’s tennis over Loras College after an 8-1 victory over the University of Dubuque Saturday.
