This week marks Fire Prevention Week across the country, an opportunity to remind children what to look out for and what to do to prevent fires; and one step they can take, is to discuss it with their parents.

The Knoxville Fire Department will host an open house on Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Along with equipment displays and reminders about changing the batteries on your smoke detector, there will be safety tips for children.

Lt. Jackson Agan from the Knoxville Fire Department tells KNIA/KRLS News he hopes kids will share those helpful hints with their parents.

“Kids are our target right now,” Agan says. “They’re really interested in it, and so we catch their interest, they go home, talk to their parents about it; it creates conversation at home to work on some fire prevention stuff.”

One hazard Lt. Agan says homeowners should watch for is clutter; items in storage should be kept away from any potential source of flame such as heaters or electrical outlets…or else they could quickly fuel any small fire, and cause it to spread.
