It’s opening night for the Knoxville Area Community Theatre, as they hold the first of four performances of the musical “Nice Work if You Can Get It” this evening.

This musical is built around songs and music by George Gershwin; and even though it was first performed on Broadway in 2012, the cast says it has the look and feel of a classic musical from the 1950’s or earlier.

The story is set in 1927, during Prohibition; a band of bootleggers think they’ve found the perfect place to hide their stash of illegal gin — a seemingly-empty beach house. But the owners suddenly come to stay the weekend, and host a wedding; so the bootleggers have to pose as the staff in order to keep an eye on their 400 cases of liquor.

“Nice Work if You Can Get It” runs through Sunday at the Knoxville Performing Arts Center; performances are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m. with a matinee on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
