This is the time of year when fireplaces and chimneys get their most usage; but whether you have a roaring fire going on special occasions, or use it throughout the winter, Knoxville Fire Chief Cal Wyman says you should make sure it’s safe for usage.
Wyman tells KNIA/KRLS News buildup in a chimney can cause a smoke or fire hazard if it isn’t properly cleaned out.
“As stuff burns, it builds in that chimney; and if it gets to a point that it gets blocked off it can either smoke up your entire house, or as the creosote builds up it can actually start to burn inside the chimney, which then can start the house on fire,” Wyman says.
He recommends that you get your chimney looked at on a yearly basis by a certified inspector, and have it cleaned regularly by professionals.
