It was a long haul for the PCM basketball teams on Tuesday night making the trip to Fairfield and the Mustangs came home empty handed being swept in a pair of games.

As heard on the KRLS3 Stream in the girls’ game a forgettable second quarter doomed the Mustangs in a 62-49 defeat. A couple early threes from Regan Freland and Lilli Baird allowed PCM to go toe-for-toe with the Trojans in the first quarter only trailing 15-14 after eight minutes of play. In the second the Trojans bothered the Mustangs with full court pressure outscoring them 18-7 in that timeframe and could never recover in the second half. Fifteen of the Mustangs’ 21 turnovers came in the first two quarters. Freland was her normal self with 18 points and Baird also was in double figures with 11. PCM falls to 5-7.

In the boys’ game it was an entertaining first half with the Mustangs having a slight 28-27 lead at intermission. Fortune began to turn early out of half when Andrew Van Ryswyk picked up his fourth and fifth foul back-to-back with six minutes to play in the third to finish his night with 11 points. The offense could never find its rhythm again, as Fairfield controlled much of the final 16 minutes en route to a 63-52 win. Reed Worth paced the Mustangs with 22 points. A silver lining in Van Ryswyk’s absence was senior reserve Jordon Devries’ activity on the defensive end. Fairfield’s 6’4’’ bruising center Austin Simpson had his way in the first half with 11 points but was kept in check the final two quarters with Devries drawing the assignment on him. Simpson finished with 16 points. PCM falls to 6-4.

Both teams get back on the court Friday hosting North Polk.
