Pella was once again recently ranked the second safest city in Iowa. The ratings were compiled by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky tells 92.1 KRLS News the recognition is a testament to the citizens of Pella and their pride in the community.
“I believe people naturally default to the local police department whenever they hear this is a safe community–they seem to praise the local police department, and we’re certainly happy to receive that praise,” he says. “But really, the truth be known, it speaks volumes about the community and the quality of the community.”
Bokinsky says their department strives to not only stop criminal activity, but to prevent crime and to keep citizens as safe as they can be.
Indianola was ranked the 23rd safest city in the state, while Warren County neighbor Norwalk has been rated at the top of the list. Indianola saw 90 violent crimes over the past year, with 359 property crimes, while Norwalk has just seen 9 and 90 respectively. Iowa has been named the 24th safest state for property crime, and 31st in violent crime. The National Council for Home Safety and Security determines the list by reviewing statistics from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, and a total of 7,639 cities across the country were factored into the rankings.
