The next selection in the Knoxville Public Library’s monthly foreign film presentation is based on a book which is a personal favorite of its director.
The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out a Window and Disappeared is a 2013 comedy in Swedish, directed by Felix Herngren. It will be shown as part of the library’s International Film Fan Club in February.
Library Director Roslin Thompson tells KNIA/KRLS News the book is a favorite of hers.
“I actually read the book and it is by a Swedish writer named Jonas Jonasson; and I was taken with the book. And when I found out that the movie was available, I just thought, ‘Oh my goodness, we’ll have to show the movie,’” Thompson says.
The story concerns a man who has led a colorful life as an explosives expert, but is now confined to a nursing home. As his 100th birthday approaches, he decides to break out of the nursing home; his escape leads him on a series of adventures, all played for laughs.
Thompson says because last month’s film dealt with the Holocaust, some of the regular attendees were looking for something lighter this time around. She notes the film is rated R due to some strong language.
