It was a successful road trip to Grimes for the Pella basketball teams, as the girls defeated Dallas Center-Grimes 51-48 and the boys 68-43 to pick up key Little Hawkeye Conference wins.
After a fast 12-7 start for the Lady Dutch at the end of one, it was a forgettable second quarter with Pella turning the ball over in 10 of 11 possessions to find themselves down 26-17 at intermission. Pella regrouped at half and took care of the rock in the final two quarters that allowed them to chip away at the deficit. They outscored the Fillies 18-6 in the 4th quarter. Pella took their first lead of the second half late in the fourth on the strength of Emily Holterhaus in the post and timely shooting from Faith Diers. Holterhaus had a game-high 25 points and Diers finished with 10 including a spot up three that put the Lady Dutch up for good. Head Coach Jerod Garland tells KRLS Sports the sophomore not only was hitting shots but also impacting the game in a lot of ways.
“She put things together tonight. She made a number of great plays in a variety of ways. She was very composed and it was a great night for her.”
In the boys’ contest the 6-12 Mustangs were able to slow down the fast paced Little Dutch to hang with them in the first half only trailing 24-17 at the break. Once the lead got to double digits DCG was forced to speed things up and that fell right into Pella’s strength, as the lead quickly ballooned to 20 and only grew from there. The Little Dutch utilized a stifling press to turn the Mustangs over and hot shooting from behind the arc put the game on ice. Logan Shetterly went off for 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half. Ryan Gustafson chipped in with 10.
The girls improve to 14-5 while the boys move to 14-4. Both teams stay on the road tomorrow facing off with Indianola, a doubleheader that can be heard on FM 92.1 KRLS.
