Both Pella Christian basketball teams earned convincing wins over Newton last night in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.  Final scores were 56-25 in favor of the Eagle girls and 69-51 for the PC boys.

Leading 12-6 at the end of the first quarter, the Pella Christian girls exploded for 28 points in the second quarter, including five three point baskets.  Coach Brad Engbers’ club made nine shots in total from beyond the arc on the night.

“When the ball goes in the basket it makes a coach look a lot smarter, and that was the case tonight.  It was really a lot of fun to see the girls move the ball around. We made some extra passes, and we got some three point shots out of our offense tonight by running set plays.”

Emma Huisman hit five of the triples, scoring 15 points.  Chloe Morgan added two deep balls as part of her 14 point outing.  But it was the post play of Allison Van Gorp that led all scorers, as she took advantage of the space created by the hot outside shooting to score 16 points, all on layups.

The Eagle girls improve to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the Little Hawkeye Conference.

The boys game against the winless Cardinals was a little more snug than anticipated, with Pella Christian holding just a four-point lead just ahead of intermission.  But a basket before the buzzer, and a 14-0 run to start the third quarter put the game on ice.

Josh Van Gorp and Dan Jungling each scored 12 points, Keean Cadwell added 11, and the Eagles outrebounded Newton 46-16 in improving to 12-7 on the season and 5-7 in the LHC.

Up next for both Pella Christian teams is homecoming tomorrow night against Oskaloosa.
