The Indianola School Board met in regular session Monday evening. During the public comments period, teachers, students, former teachers and administrators, and members of the public flooded the district boardroom well past capacity to come forward to speak on the removal of permissive language in the latest proposal by the board for the teacher master contract.
Speakers urged the board to not take out permissive language, which lays out in the contract certain items such as sick leave, maternity leave, or insurance benefits. The board was not allowed to publicly comment on the issue at hand, as it was not listed as an agenda item, but will have an opportunity to reflect their position in the boards next contract proposal. The current teacher contract expires at the end of 2019.
The board approved an extension of the school year an extra two days to make up for lost time due to snow cancellations and early or late starts, which puts the last day of school on June 3rd, with graduating seniors exempt from the extension. The board also voted approval for Superintendent Art Sathoff to continue to explore further options to make up for the lost education hours.
