One of the most active winters in recent memory for the state of Iowa continued early this week with a widespread snow storm, dumping over half a foot of snow on most of south central Iowa and causing continuing travel issues.

Snowfall totals (as of Tuesday morning):
Pella (near Lincoln School) – 6.8″
Knoxville (KNIA/KRLS Studio) – 6.5″
Bussey – 7.5″
Pleasantville – 6.4″
Prairie City – 6”
Sully – 7”
Pella (2 miles south) – 7”

According to estimates by the National Weather Service, most of Marion County has seen between 3 to 4 feet of snow since November. Pella Police Chief Robert Bokinsky says just nine snow ordinance tickets were issued. Pella Public Works staff was able to clear several roads overnight, and Marion County Road Department crews will continue work today to clear as many rural roads as possible. Several gravel roads remain impassable due to large snow drifts, which could remain the case until Thursday. County crews will be out for full shifts until they are able to be cleared. Anyone in need of assistance with shelter due to blocked roads should contact Marion County Emergency Management, and any emergencies should be directed to 911.

In the forecast, a break from snow will be in place at least through Saturday night, although a warm up through Thursday into the low 30s will flip air temperatures back to single digits overnight and in the teens Friday and Saturday.
