Two Presidential contenders braved the weather to attend the Marion County Democrats’ Presidents Day Luncheon on Sunday.

Former Rep. John Delaney of Maryland and Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota met and spoke with voters at Peace Tree Brewing in Knoxville.

Both have different takes on the Green New Deal, a series of proposals which address both climate change and economic inequality. Sen. Klobuchar tells KNIA/KRLS News this is a starting point for government to deal with both topics.

“I see that as an aspiration, as a goal; and it’s really important to take on climate change, we all know that — we see the changing climate in Minnesota and in Iowa, and how it’s affecting our farmers,” Sen. Klobuchar says. “But we’ve got to make sure that hand in hand goes protecting ourselves from the damages of climate change while seeing the economic value.”

But Delaney still favors a bipartisan carbon tax which he proposed while still in Congress, believing it would address the problem sooner.

“We have to do something right away, and the reason I’m not in favor of the Green New Deal and supportive of my bipartisan carbon tax is because I believe we can get that done right away. If you start linking climate change to universal health care and universal basic income, it just makes it harder. And we need to do something right away,” Delaney says.

Both candidates are looking to tie in with the agricultural community of the state; Klobuchar says she wants to bridge the urban-rural gap, and help voters in large cities understand where their food comes from, and what needs ag states have. Delaney says Iowa has the opportunity to take the lead in tech development for agriculture, and should take advantage of it.
