Shortly before 4:00 this morning, the Pella Fire Department was called to the Van Gorp Corporation at 1410 Washington street for a report of a grease fire, which then spread to an oil burner. The fire was contained to an addition on the east end of the facility.
Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom says most of the damage came from metal panels that had to be removed due to the flames, as well as smoke damage. No injuries were reported. Pella Ambulance and the Pella PD assisted at the scene.
Van Gorkom says he had to clear snow from the closest hydrant to the building, and that it’s fortunate nobody was in life-or-death danger while he had to spend the extra time to get water to the fire. He asks everyone in the community to keep hydrants clear of snow for emergencies.
