Hundreds of volunteers gave their time at Knoxville High School on Thursday, packing ready-to-prepare meals for people in need around the world.

The second annual Meals from the Heartland packing event brought students from all grade levels and a few outside volunteers to the high school gymnasium; wearing hairnets and gloves, and using measuring cups and scales, teams of volunteers filled bags with rice, soybean, dehydrated vegetables and vitamin powder.

Senior Angelina Lovell is with the Knoxville FFA, which again organized the event; she tells KNIA/KRLS News they got plenty of volunteers, and those who took part were glad to help and enjoyed the experience.

“I feel like we’ve had a lot; it’s been really fun, people have been participating, (they’ve) had fun taking pictures, hashtagging, putting them in for the drawings we have; it’s been really fun,” Angelina says.

These bags were then sealed and boxed up for shipment by the Des Moines-based charity; they will be sent to areas of the country or around the world where hunger is a constant problem.
