While movement has been slower in the past few weeks, there’s still momentum to begin establishing a constitutional amendment for Iowa that would restore voting rights to felons who have served their time. State Representative Dustin Hite says discussions are ongoing in a bipartisan manner to figure out the best way to proceed with the proposed law, as Iowa is one of two states that doesn’t have anything on the books to restore those rights in an automatic way. Currently, the governor’s office can be petitioned for restoration of voting rights. Hite is unsure if the measure will pass this session due to tie ups over how to handle restitution, but he’s optimistic it will clear during the current two-year General Assembly.
