It’s taken quite the juggling act, but the Knoxville School District has a schedule in place to make up missed time from this winter’s barrage of snow days by the end of May — assuming there are no more days to make up for.
The school board voted Monday night in favor of a revised schedule which will allow the district to reclaim 48 of the 64 classroom hours lost due to snow and extreme cold. The state allows school districts to write off up to 18 hours per year.
The district will dispense with the two-hour late start on Mondays for March 11th and April 29th through May 20th; it will also hold classes on Wednesday, March 20th and Friday, April 19th — the last day of spring break and Good Friday, respectively.
The March 20th date was a sticking point for some teachers who already have plans; but Superintendent Cassi Pearson says the district should be able to get the necessary substitute teachers to fill in for those already planning to take the day off. Those with a remaining personal day can use it then, while those who don’t will get an unpaid day; all requests for an off day will be honored.
There will also be no early dismissal on Friday, May 24th; and extra days will be added from Tuesday, May 28th through Friday, May 31st. The last day is a scheduled half-day, but time could be added on if there’s an additional delayed two-hour start.
But Pearson warns if there are any more full snow days, they will have to stretch into June; this will be problematic because fewer teachers will be available, and similar problems with other school districts means substitutes will be in high demand.
