A healthcare company which provides mental health services to this region of Iowa is opening a new center nearby; but it will still be a challenge for residents of Marion County to get there.
Community Health Centers of Southern Iowa gave a presentation to the Marion County Coalition for Change on Wednesday, at the Knoxville Hospital and Clinics; it outlined plans for its first access center in Osceola, a center designed for the intake and evaluation of persons with mental health difficulties.
Substance abuse and mental health issues often go hand in hand, and getting treatment for both is one of MC3’s aims; but Teri Van Kooten tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s still their hope that CHCSI or another similar organization eventually brings a dedicated health service office to Marion County, close to the people here who need them.
“Yeah we would, because it’s such a huge component when we are talking with substance abuse; mental health becomes a big factor in it, and we need those professionals closer than what they are right now,” Van Kooten says.
“Many times families are having to drive great distances, and their family members who are struggling are having to go to great distances away from their home to receive the help they need.”
Van Kooten says they welcome the arrival of the new center to Osceola, and hope to be able to use the resources Community Health Centers provides.
