The winter weather situation in the month of February will go down as one of the most active months on record.
According to the National Weather Service, in Knoxville, 19.6 inches was recorded, which was shy of a previous record set in 1912 (26”). However, Des Moines broke the record for most snowfall recorded in any month of February, as 25” fell at the airport. Approximately 18 inches of snow fell in Pella in February. The average temperature over the past month was 17 degrees, about nine degrees below normal as well. In total this season, just under 50 inches total of snow has been reported in Knoxville since November, and approximately 44 in Pella.
Bitter cold returns to the region Monday morning, as temperatures will drop well below zero, with wind chill values as low as 25 below zero possible. Long term forecasts from the National Climate Center indicate colder than average temperatures are expected to continue through the middle of the month.
