For those involved in the trial of a Marion County man charged with the shooting death of his mother, the scene shifts nearly 150 miles to the west.
Trial begins tomorrow in Council Bluffs for Jason Carter, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother Shirley in June of 2015.
Marion County Attorney Ed Bull is expected to argue Carter had a financial motive behind his mother’s death, and that he had to have been responsible since he knew details which would only have been apparent to the perpetrator.
Defense Attorney Christine Branstad and her team has submitted several motions to limit testimony or exclude evidence, as well as one to dismiss the case altogether.
Proceedings will open with jury selection; a pool of 38 jurors is expected, and each side may exclude up to 12 each; this would leave 12 jurors and two alternates to hear the case.
The trial is expected to take around four weeks.
