Opening arguments could begin as early as today, in the first-degree murder trial of a Marion County man charged with the death of his mother.

Jury selection has been going on since Tuesday in Council Bluffs, in the trial of Jason Carter; the case was moved there due to pre-trial publicity in the wake of the June 2015 shooting death of Shirley Carter.

Marion County Attorney Ed Bull and Defense Attorney Christine Branstad have been working from a pool of nearly 40 potential jurors, seeking to choose twelve jurors and two alternates to hear the case.

If a full jury is impaneled today, opening arguments could commence as early as this afternoon; the balance of the trial could take three to four weeks.
