The Pella boys and girls track and field teams have started the indoor track and field season, participating the Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor Invitational in Grinnell Thursday.
Girls and boys from the larger schools in the league all gathered to kick off the competitive season on the oval, but no team scores were kept.
It’s the first meet for the defending Class 3A state team champion Lady Dutch, who had 1st place finishes from Emily McMartin in the 60 meter dash, Roselande Vanderhoff in the 200 meters, Evie Armstrong in the long jump, and the 4×200 (Metsje Miller, Roselande Vanderhoff, Esther Diers, Elsie Thoreson) and 4×400 (Ashley Blommers, Caroline McMartin, Emily Holterhaus, Thoreson) relays.
Jordan Buma claimed 1st in the 60 meter hurdles, Gabe Thomas in the long jump, and a 1-2 finish for Mason Huerter and Nick DeJong in the shot put. The 4×400 Relay (Jordan Buma, Drew Van Hauen, Tony Schmitz, and Jackson Rozenboom) and Shuttle Hurdle Relay (Gabe Thomas, Brandon Winegardner, Nolan Clayberg, and Buma) broke new conference records for the indoor season as well.
The Pella boys next compete at the Central College invitational on March 15th, while the girls head to Iowa State University for their indoor meet on March 18th.
