The National Weather Service in Des Moines has released their flood outlooks for the upcoming spring season, and flooding of rivers and streams is more likely due to the harsh winter. Senior Hydrologist Jeff Zogg tells KNIA News heavier-than-average snowfall this winter, current snowpack, above-average soil moisture heightens the risk of floods, and says that if you live near a flood area you should prepare now by buying flood insurance as there is a 30-day waiting period for flood insurance, so this is the most advanced warning you will get that you need to purchase it. Zogg also said in the event of a flood or rising waters, to not attempt to cross a flooded roadway or path as you don’t know how stable the ground is.
