Jurors at the trial of a Marion County man charged with his mother’s murder heard the initial 9-1-1 call on the day of her death, which was placed by the defendant.

Jason Carter is standing trial in Council Bluffs for the death of his mother Shirley. Testimony included the playing of the Marion County dispatcher’s recording of his phone call; a distraught-sounding Carter was initially mistaken for his father, since he told the dispatcher he was calling from Bill Carter’s residence.

Sheriff Jason Sandholdt also presented a recording of police dispatch traffic and his own phone records from the day of the murder, reviewing the positions and actions of law enforcement and medical personnel. He further discussed the course of the investigation, and how upset the family was with his department in the days following her death.

The case presented by Marion County Attorney Ed Bull continues to offer a timeline which supports the state’s argument that Jason Carter was able to be on the premises at the time of her death to commit the shooting.

The defense has contended he discovered his mother’s body shortly after she was shot.
