In April, Pella Regional Health Center is opening a new state-of-the-art Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine area under the direction of Dr. John Kanis, Medical Director. Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine will be located within the newly renovated section of the hospital at the corner of Jefferson and Hazel streets. Nurses from Wound and Hyperbaric Center perform wound assessments and determine treatment plans under the direction of Kanis. Along with Molly Engelhart, Dr. Kanis will lead the team specializing in treatments for chronic and non-healing wounds. These wounds are defined as sores or injuries that have not significantly improved after conventional treatments. Many times, these wounds are related to inadequate circulation, poorly functioning veins, diabetes, pressure and immobility. Non-healing wounds lead to lower quality of life and may lead to amputations.
Treatments include:
Debridement (removal of dead or damaged tissue)
Specially chosen dressings and wraps
Offloading pressure techniques
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Bio-engineered tissue substitutes
