An expert witness for the defense in the Jason Carter case says his mother may have been dead for hours, before her body was found in her home.

Carter is accused of the June 2015 death of Shirley Carter; forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht testified Shirley Carter may have been dead for around two hours, while the prosecution maintains she was shot within a half-hour of Jason Carter reportedly finding her and calling 9-1-1.

Marion County Attorney Ed Bull noted how much Dr. Wecht is being paid for his testimony by Carter’s attorneys; prosecutors also questioned whether Carter may have left the murder scene.

Testimony resumed Tuesday, as his defense team questioned witnesses about the investigation into his mother’s death and other possible suspects in her murder.

The trial was continued for a day on Monday, after the defense received additional files in connection to the investigation and requested time to review it all.

Afternoon questioning also centered around other people talked to by police, some of whom said they had information about the death; police notes indicate several persons claimed to know who was involved, as well as the location of the murder weapon.

Defense Attorney Christine Branstad brought up several other potential leads investigators had pursued; the defense has said the investigation had zeroed in on her client and disregarded other possible suspects.

Marion County Attorney Ed Bull has argued Carter’s strained relationship with his mother and his own financial troubles led him to take her life, for monetary gain, and that other leads were dead ends.
