Marion County Humane Society is one of many animal shelters across Iowa helping out, after rescuers dealing with flooding in the western part of the state encountered another problem on top of the disaster.
A group of hoarded pets were found in a residence near Pacific Junction being threatened by flood waters; they had to be taken to safety quickly, and then transferred to any facility which could take them.
Amanda Panko with Marion County Humane Society says she got a call from a colleague looking for facilities which could take in any of the pets; six dogs wound up at the shelter in Knoxville.
Panko tells KNIA/KRLS News between the flooding and the hoarding, the pets will need some extra care before they can be adopted out.
“They probably are going to need a little bit of medical care; the biggest thing right now is getting them settled down. They were in flood waters, so they’re going to need a little TLC; we’ll get them checked out by a vet…hopefully, they’ll be up for adoption shortly,” Panko says.
A horse trailer taking these and other pets to facilities around the state dropped off the dogs in Knoxville on Wednesday night; Panko is confident new homes can be found for them.
