A fisher who saved the lives of several people at Lake Red Rock has been honored by the American Red Cross. Nate Thayer is a 2019 Hero of the Heartland. Thayer, a Martensdale resident, was fishing at Lake Red Rock in June of 2018 when he saw a group of people nearby struggling to swim. Nate drove towards them and began tossing life jackets to those struggling and pulling them from the water onto his boat. One of the rescued, an 8-year-old girl, needed CPR, which Nate performed to save her life. In total, he assisted in the rescue of ten people that day. The Iowa heroes were honored Tuesday in Des Moines during the 17th annual Heroes of the Heartland breakfast.
