Pella Middle School students have packed more than 100,000 meals for those in need over the past three years.

Last week, members of their student council led the rest of the 7th and 8th grade classes in helping through Meals from the Heartland. Piper Eighmy and Stephen Gaul say the group applied for and received a grant from the Pella Community Foundation, which was for $4000 and matched by Meals from the Heartland to provide the supplies to pack 40,000 meals at the event.

“We really included facts about hunger that spoke to us and that are pressing us every year to make a difference,” Eighmy says.

“Seventh grade had a session where they packaged 20,000 meals, and eighth grade had a section where they packaged 20,000, and each of us as a student council member was in charge of a table, and then we worked as teams to fill boxes full of meals that would be helpful to kids all around the world,” Gaul says.
