A bill moving through the Iowa General Assembly would provide tuition grants to students looking to enroll in courses which would put them on track to enter certain types of jobs where there’s high demand for workers.

An important change in the bill would require a listing of high-demand jobs which students can seek classes for; right now, such professions as welder, electrician and nurse fall into this area.

State Sen. Amy Sinclair tells KNIA/KRLS News as time moves on and the demands for workers in particular professions change, individual institutions may determine which of the programs they offer can remain eligible.

“Most of those right now are the skilled workforce areas; those are designated by the local community college regents for what’s necessary and needed in any given local area,” Sen. Sinclair says.

Another provision of the bill would allow students to remain enrolled at a particular institution, and continue to receive aid, even if the institution decides the profession they’re working towards no longer qualifies as a high-demand profession.
