A handful of Central College track and field distance runners and field-event athletes got the Blue Oval Invitational started on Friday at Drake Stadium.

There are no team scores to report at the end of Friday night. The poor weather saw many athletes drop out of the field, including some of Central’s original entrants.

WOMEN’S EVENTS

The Dutch women dominated the discus throw, taking four of the top-six spots. Kennedy Morris had the winning discus throw of 135 feet, 8 inches. Gillian Streit was third (130-0) and Lilly Smithson was fourth (126-3).

Miranda Kruiswyk won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:57.60, the fifth-fastest time in the league this spring.

Long jumper Landry Luhring took sixth place with a leap of 15-0 in her first outdoor effort.

MEN’S EVENTS

On the track, Kyle Pape and Will DeHaan had top-five finishes in the 1,500-meter run. Pape was second in 4:06.27 and DeHaan was fifth 4:09.04. Brycen Wallace added a fifth-place effort in the 5,000-meter run (15:48.13)

In a small 3,000-meter steeplechase field, Jordan Toomey was the runner-up with a time of 10:02.12. Cutler Owens was fourth in 10:22.19

Shot putter Nathan Fitzgerald had a mark of 46-6.25, placing fifth. Teammate Theo Baldus was eighth (41-9.75). In the javelin throw, Luke Pavlat (freshman, Pella) took eighth with a toss of 116-10.

The college events on the second day of Blue Oval Invitational start at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday with the women’s javelin throw.
