Central College celebrated Senior Day on a perfect afternoon for baseball but they couldn’t celebrate any wins, as the University of Dubuque left Pella with a doubleheader sweep, as heard live on KRLS.
After a 10-0 Central victory over the Spartans on Friday, Dubuque was not going to let history repeat itself scoring in each of the first three innings of game one to build a 5-0 lead. The Dutch clawed their way back into the game scoring a run in the third, fourth, and fifth frame headlined by a RBI double by Garrett Saunders. That hit was his 45th career double that is now an all-time record at Central. Despite racking up 10 hits in the ballgame the Dutch could not scratch across any more runs and fell 6-3. Tyler Steward took the loss going three innings of five run ball while Rece Martin kept the team in it with five innings of relief giving up just one run. Saunders finished 3-for-5 at the plate.
In the nightcap, the Spartans scratched across a pair of runs in the first helped by a pair of Dutch errors. The lead was cut in half in the fifth when Central scored on a balk by Spartan pitcher Chase Kueter. The biggest excitement of the day for Dutch fans came in the sixth when Joe Rebik blasted a two-run bomb to left field to take a 3-2 advantage. That lead did not last long, as University of Dubuque’s Luke Carroll returned the favor in the seventh with a two-run home run himself. Central had chances in the final innings but it was not enough as they fell in the rubber match 5-3. Tanner Wood had a pair of hits and took the loss on the bump despite going 6 2/3 innings of just two earned runs. Kueter threw a complete game for UD giving up three runs on nine hits.
Central drops to 18-12 overall and 8-11 in American Rivers Conference. They look to rebound Tuesday when they travel to Indianola to face Simpson for a doubleheader.
